(June 2008) – Madison Regatta race fans will get a sneak preview of the upcoming American Boat Racing Association’s Unlimited hydroplane season if they head down to the Ohio River on June 17. That’s the day the Miss Madison-Oh Boy! Oberto race team is planning to test the race boat in preparation for the upcoming season. Testing will begin at 8 a.m., weather and river conditions permitting.
Driver Steve David, crew chief Mike Hanson and owners’ representative Bob Hughes plan to take part in the testing session.
The Thunder on the Ohio in Evansville will be the first race of the 2008 season and will take place June 27-29 on the Ohio River. The Madison Regatta is scheduled for July 5-6, but the festival events begin a week earlier, on Saturday, June 28.
A complete lineup of festival events is provided in the box. The race schedule and race previews will be published in RoundAbout’s annual Madison Regatta Guide. Watch for the free publication to appear on June 27.
Entrants sought for Miss Madison Regatta Scholarship Pageant
The Miss Madison Regatta Scholarship Pageant, sponsored by Xi Beta Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, will be held Monday, June 30. The pageant is open to girls between the ages of 18-26. Entrants must have reached their 18th birthday by June 1.
The competition is not limited to the Madison area, but also includes the surrounding counties and states. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship plus various other awards. She should be available to represent the Madison community in all Madison Regatta related activities during the week of the pageant and the weekend following the pageant (June 30-July 6).
Applications are now available at River Valley Financial Bank, 430 Clifty Dr., Steinhardt Heating & Air Conditioning in Hanover, and Miss Vivian’s Tanning Salon on Miles Ridge Road.

• Saturday, June 28: Little Miss Pageant (ages 5-8). noon at the Madison Consolidated High School Auditorium.
• Saturday, June 28: Miss Pre-Teen Pageant (ages 9-13). noon at the Madison Consolidated High School Auditorium.
• Saturday, June 28: Miss Teen Pageant (ages 14-17). 6 p.m. the Madison Consolidated High School Auditorium.
• Saturday, June 28: Kickoff Party presented by the Madison Moose Lodge. 1 p.m.-? at the Madison Moose Lodge.
• Monday, July 2: Xi Beta Upsilon Miss Madison Regatta Beauty Pageant (ages 18-26). 7:30 p.m. at the Madison Consolidated High School Auditorium.
• Wednesday, July 2: Fillin’ Station Liquors Waterball Fight. 5:30 p.m. on Vaughn Drive and Broadway Street.
• Tuesday, July 1: Indiana-Kentucky Electric Corp. Bed Race. 5:30 p.m. on Main Street in front of Jefferson County Courthouse.
• Wednesday, July 2: WORX 96.7 FM Street Dance. 8-11 p.m. at Fireman’s Park, foot of Jefferson Street & Vaughn.
• Thursday, July 3: Sprint Media Party & Madison Area Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours. 4 – 6:30 p.m. at the VIP Tent at the riverfront. (Open to the media, race drivers, team owners, race officials, chamber members and their guests only.)
• Music on the River, sponsored by Arvin Sango Inc., Big-O Tires, Madison Music Center at Fireman’s Park on the riverfront. 7-11 p.m.
• Thursday, July 3: Radio 96.3 WJAA Battle of the Bands 7-11 p.m.
• Friday, July 4: 95.3 WIKI, 1460 AM WJCP and Eagle 99.3 present Young Country and Whiskey Kiss, 7-11 p.m.
• Friday, July 4: R.C. Boat Races. 10 a.m. at Krueger Lake inside JPG.
• Saturday, July 5: WORX 96.7 FM / WXGO 1270 AM present the Jimmy Davis Band, Battle of Band winner and other bands, 1-11 p.m.
• Friday, July 4: Madison Regatta Parade. 6 p.m. on Main Street beginning at Jefferson Street.
• Saturday, July 5: The Madison Courier Firecracker 10k Walk/Run. 8 a.m. walk; 8:30 a.m. run, beginning at the Madison Consolidated High School.
• Friday-Sunday, July 5-6: Grote Industries Air Shows. Times TBA at the riverfront.
•  Saturday, July 5: American Legion Post No. 9 Fireworks Spectacular. approximately
10 p.m. at the riverfront. (Free admission)
