Crafton family buys, renovates
Madison, Ind., coffee shop

The former G.H. Coffee is now Crafted Coffee Co.

(February 2021) – For years, brothers Trevor and Van Crafton have had an “unofficial” office at a downtown Madison, Ind., coffee shop. When that shop came up for sale in October 2020, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they jumped at the chance to own it. Customers can often find the business entrepreneurs plotting and planning their next moves at their new Crafted Coffee  Co., located at 329 W. Main St. It was formerly G.H. Coffee.
“We simply love this place,” said Trevor, 41, a former executive director of the Madison Area Chamber of Commerce. “We sadly saw the coffee shop business decline because of COVID-19, and we decided to step in and take over ownership.”
Trevor and Van, 37, a field artillery captain in the Indiana Army National Guard, have a vested interest in Madison. Their family formerly owned the Cozy Acres Golf Complex, and they’ve worked for the community in many capacities over the years. The brothers have also formed a company that invests in dilapidated homes in the community and works with local contractors to rebuild and get homeowners into them. Their company, Crafton Brothers, currently has 47 properties.

Trevor and Van are not the only Craftons involved in Crafted Coffee Co. Trevor’s wife, Sara, and Van’s wife, Rachel, are also key players in the venture and are both very excited about additional goals and changes that will be made.
According to Van, Rachel was worried that not many coffee shops are family friendly. Thanks to her, there are comfortable booster seats, high chairs and even a kid table available for families. The Craftons understand that particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, families need to get out of their homes. Many do not have reliable Internet for school or business. They want families to feel welcome to bring kids. “When the weather permits, we also plan to have outdoor seating, including a pet-friendly place,” said Van.
Sarah gets the credit for coming up with the idea of creating crafted charcuterie, or meat and cheese, boards that will go well with the crafted beers, wines and liquor that will be added to the offerings at Crafted Coffee Co. when their three-way license is approved. “While we do plan to offer alcohol, we don’t plan on changing our hours to become a late-night hangout,” said Trevor. “We believe crafted liquors will go well with crafted coffee and be an excellent addition.”
The menu will be familiar to the coffee shop fans who haven’t visited the former G.H. Coffee in a few months. In addition to the assortment of coffee and tea selections, there are breakfast foods, sandwiches, wraps, bagels and pastries. “Katie Lockridge makes pastries from scratch that are to die for,” said Trevor.
The Craftons decided to keep the same menu, yet they have made continual improvements since their takeover. “We’ve doubled portions, improved the quality of ingredients and offered more options, including gluten-free,” said Trevor, “We focus on quality, customer service and cleanliness. Those are non-negotiable.”
The décor has also remained similar with the addition of unique Emily McDerment indoor plants. They are spaced around the shop, and there are several for sale in the rear of the shop.
“The little plants give the place a relaxed and cheerful feel,” said Van. “We want people to feel welcome to come sit, use our Wi-Fi and take their time. One of the logos we plan to put on our window will be ‘Stay Awhile.’ ”
Cheyanne Vance, head Barista at Crafted Coffee, has been working at the shop for three years. “From day one there have been positive changes, and we all have a positive attitude,” she said. “This is a peaceful place to hang out, and the changes coming are exciting.”

The Craftons have worked to improve employee relations and have recently added dividend sharing with employees. “Business has picked up 20 percent from October,” said Trevor, “We want everyone to know we are following all CDC guidelines, and we want people to feel safe coming here. We also have curbside pickup, and we are available through Door Dash, too.”
