Andersons’ Sales & Service expands into Louisville with recent purchase
The family business buys Louisville Tractor dealership
(March 2019) – Headquartered at 2914 Clifty Dr. in Madison, Ind., Andersons’ Sales and Service has been a well-known name throughout the community since 1990 when Grover and Loretta Anderson purchased a small outdoor power equipment dealership. Now the current owners are looking to the future after recently purchasing Louisville Tractor, an additional equipment retailer located at 1675 Watterson Trail in Louisville, Ky.
Five years ago, Andersons’ Sales and Service introduced another change when they expanded by opening another dealership of the same name in Crestwood, Ky. Formerly Beard’s Outdoor Power Equipment, the Crestwood location at 6159 Hwy. 146 provided an opportunity to pursue this third business location.
After hearing about Louisville Tractor through a mutual acquaintance, the Anderson family found that the previous owner of the Louisville business was preparing to retire. “After having a conversation with him, we found that he was open to selling and transitioning out. That then opened up a door for him to sell to us, and we began negotiating,” said Joshua Anderson, co-owner of Andersons’ Sales and Service with his siblings.
The business deal was finalized in October 2018, with ownership fully taking place on Jan. 2. Anderson said that one of the goals of this purchase was to further expand the business’s product line and geographical reach.

Andersons’ Sales and Service started as a new family business venture for Grover Anderson. “Dad had several businesses while we were growing up. He mostly worked as a logger, which is a really dangerous profession. My brothers helped him out with that, and he didn’t want his kids growing up in that field,” said Tonia Cline, co-owner of Andersons’ Sales and Service and daughter of Grover Anderson. The next step was to purchase a small outdoor power equipment dealership in 1990, which moved to its current location in Madison in 1991.
Cline said that the family business is a way of life that she and her siblings continue to enjoy. “We have our good and bad days like any family, but at the end of the day, you’re still family,” said Cline. “We work with each other very well. We have the same values, and you can’t get that everywhere.”
Prior to adding these new locations, the Anderson family business was not a stranger to transition. In January 2001, Grover Anderson sold the business to his five children: twins Grover David and Jon 47, Tonia, 44, and twins Joshua and Jason 43.
Before purchasing the business, the current owners had gotten outside jobs but found that an opportunity to return to the family business continued to present itself. “We started giving more input, and Dad started to try certain things that we were suggesting,” said Cline. “It became clear that the business was ready for that next step and that he was ready to let us buy the business.”
Grover Anderson now owns a hardware store just up the road from Andersons’ Sales and Service. Each of his children now act as co-owners and hold various responsibilities at each location.
Grover David deals with pickups and deliveries, Jon heads up the parts department at all three locations, Tonia manages bookkeeping for the entire business, Joshua now acts as manager at the new location, and Jason focuses on equipment service at all three locations.
Andersons’ Sales and Service’s Madison location continues to focus primarily on lawn and garden equipment and brands. Now their latest business ventures are opening doors to feature new merchandise that appeals to a broader range of customers.
“We had the opportunity to introduce Kubota products at our Crestwood location. Now we have the opportunity to expand through another product line called Scag,” said Joshua Anderson. Both Kubota and Scag provide professional grade farm, lawn and construction equipment, as well as utility vehicles.
Joshua Anderson said that the transition to the Crestwood location went smoothly and that their focus has shifted to establishing the third location. “We have the right people in the right place at the Crestwood location,” he said. “Our goal now is to get the new dealership running smoothly.” Anderson said that they are currently working to install a new computer system at Louisville Tractor in order to get their technology systems up to date.
“We have three co-owners working full time at the new location right now in order to get things up and going,” he said. Anderson said that after the transition is complete, he will act as general manager at the newest location.
He said that one of the co-owners will also be stationed in Crestwood the majority of time in order to have the presence of an owner at that business. They also have an on-site general manager in Crestwood in Greg Hydes.
Despite all their recent changes, the Andersons have not forgotten their home base. “Most of the other owners will continue to be stationed primarily in Madison,” he said.
