1894 Lodge restaurant offers a community atmosphere for diners

Hostettlers bring local roots to New Washington eatery

NEW WASHINGTON, Ind. (October 2018) – A great gathering place can anchor a community. This is the principle that guided Logan Hostettler as he designed the 1894 Lodge restaurant in New Washington, Ind., and it directs every decision he makes. The menu is built with an impressive selection of locally sourced meats and produce. The full bar features locally brewed craft beers, and the building boasts both interior and patio seating to encourage relaxed conversations.

The historic old brick building in the heart of downtown New Washington is familiar to the town’s residents. Nearly 200 years old, it was once a Masonic lodge, then a schoolhouse and later, a movie theater and banquet hall.
Today, the restaurant has integrated the original architectural elements into its design, with large wooden beams and rich hardwood floors. Old photographs and artifacts are displayed throughout. These combine to bring a strong sense of the town’s roots for local customers.
Providing a spot to build local community has been Hostettler’s vision from the time he began managing the 1894 Lodge in 2016.
Born in New Washington, Logan and his parents, Greg and Peg Hostettler, moved to Tennessee when he was a young child. However, they always retained ties to their hometown and frequently visited relatives there. Now Logan, his wife, Christy, his parents and his two brothers, Lincoln and Lane, are all back in New Washington, where they operate Franklin Farms Event Venue and the 1894 Lodge. It is truly a family-run business.
“We want to keep that family feel that I was always raised with,” Logan says as he emphasizes his community focus. “We are ingrained in this community. We source all of our meat local. We grow our own produce or buy the produce from local farmers. Even our employees are really homegrown in New Washington, either going to the high school, graduated from the high school or coming back to the town.”
The employees at the 1894 Lodge are a huge part of its success. Hostettler has tried to create an atmosphere and energy that feels “second to home.” His employees agree, and they strive to be sure everyone feels comfortable and welcome. Events like Trivia Night and Build Your Own Bloody Mary Bar make for fun, lively evenings that foster new relationships.

Whether you dine inside or out, the atmosphere is inviting. The larger dining area inside offers a gas fireplace, while a smaller area offers a wood pellet stove for gathering. Outside, patrons can choose from two patio areas – one covered and one uncovered. The bar area serves up a wide selection of craft beers, many of which are from local breweries, including Upland from Bloomington, Ind., and Grand Junction near Indianapolis.
Meat entrees, like the Lodge Cut Prime Rib and the Bourbon-Glazed Smoked Pork Chops, are sourced from local butcher shop Pate’s Pantry in nearby Hanover, Ind. Sides like the white cheddar mac and cheese are made from scratch, in house, every day. The bread pudding with bourbon caramel sauce is a legendary customer favorite, baked fresh and topped with vanilla bean ice cream. Executive chef Steve Schauner creates rotating specials with the foods available locally in season.
The quality of the food and historic building also draws diners from afar. “The food, the people and the atmosphere make it a more than worth the drive from Madison,” says Madison resident and frequent customer Bonnie Wentworth. “Our first time, we went with a group, and we absolutely loved the atmosphere. They offer different food items that are not always on the menu and so far we have enjoyed it all.”
Hostettler and his family are always looking toward the future of the New Washing-ton community. They plan to expand the venues and catering operations at both the 1894 Lodge and Franklin Farms to provide beautiful spaces for folks’ most important events.
They plan to sponsor cookouts and cater more events for community organizations, as they recently did for the seniors at New Washington High School.

And the Hostettlers are always forging new relationships with local farmers, brewers and other food producers. Those are just the kind of deep-rooted, community focused values that built the town of New Washington and will continue to sustain it.
