RiverRoots Jam Tent
Jam Tent a highlight of RiverRoots Festival
(June 2018) – The Jam Tent at the RiverRoots Music and Folk Arts Festival on June 8-9 in Madison, Ind., is a place for making memories.
It is a really wonderful experience to come to the tent planning on jamming with your friends and find yourself sitting beside famous musicians like the Carolina Chocolate drops, Joe Crookston, Appalatin, or even Tommy Ramone.
This year, festival organizers are working to schedule Soda Gardocki for a Friday workshop, and
Charlie Parr and the Whiskey Bent Valley Boys for Saturday workshops.
Musicians can join the jam session or take part in a workshop at the RiverRoots Festival Jam Tent.
Several experienced musicians anchor the jam tent. They help lead the jams. Among them is bluegrass banjo player Ron Moore, who has traveled from near Dayton, Ohio, for three years to help the beginning musicians in the tent.
Just as there are many levels of players in the Jam Tent, there are also many styles of music represented. Folk, blues and singer-songwriters are the most predominant, but jazz, old country, new country and classic rock are also there.
“I visit the Jam Tent throughout the day to play with other musicians and get a chance to jam with some of the acts from the main stage,” said Moore. “Being able to be side by side with the main acts and to play along and ask questions is a one-of-a-kind opportunity. It’s something that you don’t have at other similar festivals.”
Not all the Jam Tent leaders are from out of town. Local music teacher Nancy Hart has lent her skills to the Jam Tent during the past few years.
“The jam tent is great for beginners needing an outlet to perform with others,” said Hart.
Another popular Ohio musician is Papa Joe Kretschmer. He is the essence of the old time folk musician. He carries a tiny banjo in a cardboard and duct tape case he made himself. His songs are soft and old, reminiscent of the early folk singers of the 1960s. He is a walking, singing history of that era.
All levels and styles of musicians are welcome in the Jam Tent. Beginners can get guidance from the more experienced musicians. Advanced beginners and musicians ready to take the step to performing musicians are given an opportunity to perform a few of their songs at an open mic setting.
