(June 2018) – Summer is approaching, and along with the sunshine and refreshing snow cones, comes Madison Main Street Program’s “Music in the Park” series. The annual event has been running for more than 20 years and still getting more popular year by year. It’s the time of the year to kick back and relax with some Music in the Park with The Jimmy Davis band and his opening act, Jordan Wilson, on Friday, June 15.
The event comes four times a year at the Broadway Fountain. This year’s other dates are July 13, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14. Each month will feature a different opening act. The July 13 concert will feature The Doctors Band. The Aug. 10 concert will feature The Rumors. And the Sept. 14 concert will feature J.D. Shelburne. The event is for all ages, and it is advised to bring lawn chairs to have somewhere to sit.
The Music in the Park will not only have entertainment but also a couple food venders, the Kona Ice truck, face painting and sidewalk chalk for anyone to use. The food will begin at 5 p.m., the opening act will start at 6 p.m., and the lead act will play from 7-9 p.m.
Davis, singer and guitarist in The Jimmy Davis Band, said he is excited for another year of Music in the Park. Davis has been playing for 30 years now and with his band mates for around 10 years. The band not only plays cover music but also original songs. Davis has been writing music for more than 17 years. Their music consists of a variety of different types of genres: blues, rock and roll, country and, of course, originals.
“I also teach guitar, so my favorite part is that we get to play for young people,” Davis said. “There isn’t much opportunity for younger people to hear live music since it’s normally for venues or bars for 18 or older. Little kids get to hear it, and it’s more special to them.”
Music in the Park originally started off as a celebration wanting to have a way to celebrate a good year they had. It is always evolving and finding new ways to improve this event each year, officials said.

Jimmy Davis and his band plays well known favorites as well as originals.

Victoria Perry, executive director of the Madison Main Street Program, said, “We are always trying to think of ways to appeal to the largest audience as possible. We are slowing trying to introduce some new musical acts to the lineup. We have people who perform regularly, and we want to mix it up. To add different people, we want to get people excited about that and seeing bands they haven’t seen perform before.”
Perry organized this whole event, starting from months to a year prior to this event.  While most years previously, the Main Street Program would choose different local bands every year and find others to choose from as well. But Perry wanted to do something different.
“I did a poll on our Facebook page asking what type of music people are most interested in and seeing what people are most excited about,” Perry said. “We used those results when we booked our bands, and we always have a local artist each time. We have such great talent here in Madison, and we want to make sure we showcase that.”
The Jimmy Davis Band not only plays at Music in the park but other venues as well.

“I started writing in Nashville and started doing session jobs and recording. We also play in Louisville at Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar and here in Madison at Off Broadway Tap Room,” Davis said.
