Madison Chamber sees
its biggest crowd at fall event
Soup, Stew, Chili & Brew rakes in
more than $50,000 in sales
(November 2017) – The Madison Area Chamber of Commerce wrapped up the 15th annual Soup Stew Chili & Brew Festival on Saturday, Oct. 14, with yet another record year.
With warm, sunny weather, the festival brought approximately 6,000 people to downtown. Attendees enjoyed food tastings at more than 30 food booths, beer and wine gardens, live music, carnival rides and activities for both kids and adults.
The event saw a 12 percent increase in ticket sales, increasing to $51,376. More than $40,000 goes back to the participating businesses and nonprofit groups, according to the chamber’s Executive Director Lindsay Bloos. Any remaining income goes to event expenses, is reinvested in the event or goes to the chamber’s programs and mission to provide the vision, support and resources to develop business.
“It was the best Soup Stew Chili & Brew on record. It keeps growing,” Bloos said.

Soup Stew Chili & Brew boasts an annual food competition with six categories. If you haven’t already guessed, four of those categories are Soup, Stew, Chili, & Brew. The festival also gives an award for the Best Decorated Booth.
The festival brings thousands of people to downtown Madison each year, and has been great for many businesses along Main Street, but it also serves as a fundraiser for many area non-profits.
This year’s winners are as follows:
Brew Winners: 1. Sonny Concession with “Cherry Lemonade;” 2. Hanover United Methodist with “Caramel Apple in a Cup;” 3. Butts-N-Racks with “Sex on the Beach.”
Soup Winners: 1. Schafer Family Charities with “Potato Soup;” 2. Hickory Creek with “Southern Jambalaya;” 3. Butts-N-Racks with “Smoked Chicken Soup.”
Stew Winners: River Terrace with “Burgoo;” 2. Hanover Nursing Center with “Loaded Potato;” 3. Jefferson County Democrats with “Lamb with Roasted Root Vegetables.”
Chili Winners: 1. Hanover Nursing Center with “Jack’s Reaper Chili;” 2. Madison Community Players with “Venison Chili;” 3. Troublemakers with “Troublemaker Chili.”
Best Decorated Booth: Schafer Family Charities
“We are so grateful for everyone who came out to the festival on Saturday,” Bloos said. “This is truly a community festival. We couldn’t do it without our volunteers, businesses, nonprofits and government agencies all working together. We’d like to thank Mason & Mefford and Sedam Contracting along with all of our sponsors who made Soup Stew Chili & Brew possible. Our committee works year-round to make the festival the best it can be. It is definitely a team effort.”
The festival was created as an affordable family and community event to highlight the Main Street shopping district.
